RECORD NUMBERS SEE EMILY PLAY...AND WIN!

Emily Curzon saw off a huge field to secure a place in the Grand Final as the 2009 Betfred Ladies Poker Tour launched in record-breaking style at the Alea Casino, Leeds.

The biggest number of entrants (85) for an opening leg in the tour’s three-year history played for a £10,000 prize pool and it was Emily who came out on top at the end of a lengthy heads-up.

As well as taking away the £3,000 first prize, Emily is also the first qualifier for the Grand Final in November at which she and nine other players will compete for a £20,000 poker sponsorship package for 2010 provided by Betfred.

After nearly 12 hours play it came down to a heads-up between Emily and Angela Evis, who had fought back brilliantly having almost been eliminated on the final table.

The duel lasted almost an hour and as patience started to wane and fatigue kicked in, Emily pushed all in with Jack-8 against a pair of nines. A Jack appeared on the turn and that was enough to clinch victory for the player who had made the long journey from Kent.

“It was a very tiring game, 13 hours is a long time to play poker, but I’m really excited to have won,” said Emily. “The heads-up was very tough. It was the longest heads-up I’ve ever been involved in and I would have gone all in with 3-4 off-suit at the end because I’d had enough! Angela was a very worthy opponent.

“I’m so pleased that I’ve guaranteed my seat in the Grand Final at the first attempt.

Now I can look forward to the rest of the year and the final is a couple of days after my birthday, so there could be a double celebration!”

The consolation for runner-up Angela, as well as the £2,000 second prize, was that she goes to the top of the leaderboard for the tour’s most consistent non-winner. The lady that heads the leaderboard after the eighth and last leg of the tour in London will also take their place in the Grand Final.

Lynne Beaumont, the double Betfred Ladies Poker Tour champion, failed to reach the final table but will hope to fare better in leg two at Scarborough’s Opera House casino on May 9.
