February 2009
After the promising start I had at the Grosvenor UK Brighton festival, I was really looking forward to February. James and I had planned to go to the Deep Stack Festival in Dublin , but with the weather being definitely iffy (planes were being cancelled and postponed to Ireland ), we went to the Circus Casino, Liverpool instead. 10 Kings Poker were sponsoring a festival there, so I used Betfred to enter the main event – a £500 + 50 buyin. I made day two, and went pretty deep. I lost a key hand where I had JJ v 99 v KQo – a King came on the river and it hurt me, though I picked up the side pot. I battled on, but eventually left the tourney without making the money – I think I outlasted Val Gray (one of the Betfred prize winners from Scotland ) by about two hands to be the last lady standing!! Caroline Cove also played and we were on the same table for a while on Day Two – she always makes me laugh and makes the table more fun, but it was not to be a result for the ladies….
I played the £50 with one rebuy on Sunday though and six of us shared, so the £800 I won helped the week. Anne Scambler, another Betfred finalist, also made the final table and took home some cash.
I played a bit of cash in Newcastle to keep myself going until the Broadway festival in Birmingham . I used the sponsorship to play the main event – a £1000 + 60 which was guaranteeing £100k. I had meant to spend that money on the GUKPT main event in Walsall the following week, but decided that the Broadway probably had more value – something that I have learned to look for constantly! (Thanks, James). Mind you, when I turned up to play my starting day, it was a veritable “who’s who” of British poker players!!! So I think maybe that theory was misplaced…
Again, I made Day Two, and got close to the money, but not close enough, going out with 88s v A7s in about 25th. It was interesting to note though, that of the MEGA aggressive players who had more than two, three or even four times the average chips at key points of days one and two, only one made the money!! Food for thought….. I am constantly discussing with James about whether I need to change my game – I get frustrated playing with that type of player who runs over the table. But patience and changes of gear when necessary have been key to my game, and he keeps persuading me not to try and change too much. But it is something I am constantly battling with – I would like to try and accumulate more chips in the early and middle stages and so it is always “work in progress”! Funnily enough, I am now trying different strategies at smaller local tourneys, but of course, generally the standard of players is very different and so it not always easy assessing what is working better and what isn’t.
I had no luck in the side events at the Broadway, but won a bit of cash, so on to Walsall !
I had three cashes in the side events at Walsall for Betfred – 12 th in the £150 + 15 two day event for a mind-blowing £190, 8 th in one of the £100 + 10 one day events for £370, and 6 th in the £250 + 25 two day for £1,210. So of 12 events up to the end of March that I used Betfred’s sponsorship for, I cashed in 4 – a pretty good ratio, but sadly not making the top money, which of course is where you need to be! But it makes me more sure that my day is coming – after all, you can’t win one of these things until you get into the money first!! Consistency is the key!
As I said before, I did not play the main event in Walsall , choosing the Broadway’s instead, and did not play any satellites for it either. James and I had a blazing row which resulted in me storming off back to Newcastle in the middle of the festival for a few days!! However, as you can see from the results above, I missed the little bugger and came back to play the £250 and got a result (and forgot to mention – he was 5 th)…
Most of the time it is great that we spend maybe 95% of our time together, but occasionally it all blows up. They say you shouldn’t teach your wife to drive – well I would say also that you shouldn’t CONSTANTLY be nagging your partner about how she plays poker!!! Lol… I know that he has helped me enormously in my game, but sometimes he needs to back off!! I think maybe he has got the idea now… However, I’m not the easiest person to live with either – and seriously, one of the problems with this life-style is an alien sleeping pattern. Sometimes I feel like a vampire – we miss most of the day asleep! Our routine is usually to not go to bed until about 6am , and to get up at about 2pm – and whilst James has stuck to that routine for more years than he cares to be reminded of, my natural sleep pattern if I am not playing poker, is to be tired at 11pm . So I seem to be constantly tired. I hope my body will get used to this eventually, because it does make me VERY grumpy at times!!
Plans for March include the festival at the Empire Casino, Leicester Square , and Grosvenor UK Poker Tour at The Vic.
