Event Three: Sheffield

JAGGER GETS SATISFACTION FROM SHEFFIELD WIN!

Kim Jagger, a stalwart of the Betfred Ladies Poker Tour, finally earned her first victory in the series by winning a marathon 14-hour third leg of 2009 in Sheffield.

The Stoke-on-Trent player conquered a strong field of 84 to secure the first prize of £2,980 at Napoleons Casino and book her seat for the Grand Final in November.

For the first time in the tour’s three-year history a chip count was required to separate the two protagonists in the heads-up after the 5.30am time limit to finish the game had been reached.

With 504,000 chips in play, Kim had 293,500 after the last hand had been completed, which meant she had her opponent, Wai Kwan Yuen of Birmingham, well covered.

“It’s absolutely fantastic to have won at last,” said Kim. “The whole day was great. I was on good tables all the way through and I just tried to keep my head.

“It was a fantastic game and very close at the end. It’s nice to take home a trophy that has ‘winner’ on it.”

Kim now has the chance to take on nine other players in the Grand Final of the series, in which a £20,000 poker sponsorship package for 2010 provided by Betfred will go to the overall winner.

“If I won that, it would give me such a good opportunity to play in the big tournaments,” added Kim, who joins previous 2009 leg winners Emily Curzon and Mel Lofthouse as the three qualifiers so far.

The winners of the five remaining legs of this year’s tour will join the trio in the final, as will the player who tops the leaderboard for the most consistent non-winner and also the victor of an online satellite tournament.

Angela Evis moved to the top o f the leaderboard by adding a fifth place to her opening second position in Leeds, while Sue Adams, third in last year’s final, moved up to second spot thanks to finishing fourth in the Steel City.
