The Grand Final

GRAND FINAL 2007 : THE BROADWAY CASINO, BIRMINGHAM

At approximately 4am we witnessed the final hand of the 2007 Betfred Women's Poker Tour. Both Lynne Beaumont and Dawn Allen saw a flop of 2 4 2, and the short-stacked Dawn announced "all-in", quickly called by Lynne, who turned over K 2. Dawn cringed and reluctantly revealed her Q 9. The 9 on the turn offered Dawn a glimmer of hope, but Lynne made a full house with the 4 at the river, and was therefore crowned.

CONGRATULATIONS!

The Final as it happened.

Vicki shows her intentions…

Vicki McKay had won what had been the most aggressive heat of the tour at The Western Club in London . Vicki made it perfectly clear back in July that she was prepared to play any two cards, and there was no sign of her playing any differently in the Grand Final.

Early in Level One Vicki raises to 3,000 and receives a call from Lynne and Sue Adams. The flop comes 4 K J and Vicki fires out a bet of 8,000. Lynne counts out some chips and re-raises to a total of 28,000. Sue gives up her hand and Vicki calls after a moment in the think tank. The 4 on the turn results in a 60,000 bet from Vicki, and following a moment’s thought Lynne mucks her hand. Vicki shows the table K 6 off, much to the dismay of Lynne, who takes a walk away from the table to compose herself.

Vicki is involved in more action a couple of hands later, this time with Sue Adams. In early position, Sue limps in, for Vicki to raise to 8,000 from the small blind. Sue calls and we see a flop of 7 3 J . Vicki bets out another 8,000 and Sue makes the call. The Q on the turn leads to another 8,000 bet by Vicki, and again Sue makes the call. The river of 8 results in another bet from Vicki, and Sue calls again. Vicki reveals pocket kings, and Sue shows A J . Vicki is now building up a real head of steam and more importantly a nice chip stack!

Early in Level 3 Nikki Short limps in for 3,000 in early position and Vicki raises it up to a total of 21,500, and Nikki makes the call. The flop comes T 2 6 and Nikki bets 25,000, to which Vicki calls. Both players check the J on the turn and the 7 on the river. Vicki reveals A K and Nikki turns over 9 T to take down the pot.

First elimination of the day…

Under-the-gun Nikki Short raises to 7,000 as is called by Dawn Allen, Vicki McKay (SB) and Samantha Grayson in the big blind. The flop comes 3 4 2 and Dawn bets out 5,000, leaving Samantha to sit back in her chair and think for a while, before re-raising all-in for a total of 15,000 more. Dawn makes the call and the cards go on their backs…Samantha shows 7 8 and is in real trouble as Dawn turns over A Q . The 9 on the turn offers no help to Samantha, and the 2 on the river completes Dawn’s nut flush, eliminating Samantha in eighth place for a prize of £300.

And then there were six…

Sue Adams raises under-the-gun to 12,000, and receives calls from Carla Goddard and Vicki McKay. The flop of A 5 9 induces a bet of 25,000 from Vicki, which Sue calls. The K on the turn is followed by another 25,000 bet by Vicki, but Sue re-raises all-in. Vicki calls and has Sue in all kinds of trouble with pocket 9’s making a set, to Sue’s pocket T’s. The 5 on the river completes another full house for Vicki, leaving Sue with a £350 payout.

Lynne is back in the hunt…

Following Lynne’s earlier hand with Vicki, the two lock horns again. On a board of J 4 Q 5 , Vicki raises enough to put Lynne all-in, who does make the call and shows pocket J’s for a set. Vicki turns over 8 9 and only T would help on the river. The 8 gives Vicki two pair, put it isn’t enough to stop Lynne from doubling up to 134,000.

Chip counts at the first break:-

Seat Name Chips in Play
1 Carla Goddard £138,000
2 Dawn Wood £171,000
3 Dawn Allen £151,000
4 Vicki McKay £229,500
5 Lynne Beaumont £116,00
6 Nikki Short £194,500

The Vicki McKay express rolls on…

With blinds now at 3,000 / 6,000, Vicki limps in from mid-position, Carla makes up the extra 3,000 from the small blind and Dawn checks her option. The flop of 3 5 8 leads to Carla making a 12,000 bet, and Vicki makes the call. Following the K on the turn, Vicki bets out 25,000 and Carla calls. The river is the Ks, and Vicki makes a substantial bet of 89,000, leaving Carla to ponder the strength of her hand. After a great deal of thought, Carla finally mucks her hand and no cards are shown this time.

Carla Goddard is all-in…

Carla limps in from the button, Dawn Wood completes the 8,000 from the small blind and Dawn Allen checks as we see a flop of 4 A 2 . Dawn Wood leads out with a bet of 20,000 and Carla pushes forward her remaining 54,000 chips. Dawn makes the call and shows A T for top pair, but Carla reveals pocket 4’s for a set. The turn and river of 5 8 offer no assistance to Dawn, and Carla more than doubles up and is now back in with a chance.

This one’s gonna be huge…

Nikki Short raises from under-the-gun to 25,000, and is re-raised by Dawn Wood to 50,000. After a moment’s thought, Nikki re-raises all-in and Dawn quickly calls holding pocket T’s to the A K of Nikki. Dawn’s tournament is on the line as the board runs out 7 9 J J , and the 4 on the river ensures a double-up to 270,000 for Dawn. Nikki is now in bad shape and needs to get moving with the blinds fast approaching.

There’s only one move left for Nikki…

Vicki McKay calls from the button, and Nikki pushes in her remaining 17,500 from the big blind. Vicki decides now is not the time to call, and Nikki shows the table 9 3 off suit!

The very next hand Nikki pushes all-in again from the small blind, and the move again goes uncontested. This time Nikki shows T 8 off suit!

For the third consecutive hand, Nikki Short announces all-in, but this time is called by Carla. Nikki turns over A 4, and Carla reveals A 7, leaving Nikki requiring some help. The board runs out 3 Q K 7 A eliminating Nikki in sixth place for a £400 prize.

Vicki looking vulnerable…

Having seen a monster stack dwindle to approximately 37,000, Vicki McKay decides now is the time to make a move and she announces all-in. Carla makes the call holding pocket deuces to Vicki’s T 9. The board runs out 5 J K 6 and the lifeline 9 on the river helps her double up.

Dawn Allen calls from the button, Vicki makes up the extra 6,000 from the small blind and Lynne checks. The flop of 2 3 8 leads to an all-in move from Vicki McKay which is immediately called by Dawn as she flips over pocket Q’s up against the T 5 of Vicki. The turn and river of 2 9 on the river put an end to Vicki’s Grand Final and she takes home £500.

Another one bites the dust…

Having recently doubled up through Lynne, Carla moves all-in from under-the-gun and is called by Dawn Allen. Carla turns over A J and cannot be pleased to see Dawn’s pocket J’s. The board runs out 8 9 4 2 K and that leaves us with three players. Carla takes home a prize of £625 for her efforts.

It’s a cruel, cruel game…

Dawn Allen raises from the button, Dawn Wood announces all-in, and Dawn Allen makes the call. Dawn W turns over pocket Q’s, and Dawn A reveals A T , as the dealer puts out a flop of K J 8 . Dawn Allen’s Grand Final could be all over unless a Q or A is revealed in the next couple of cards. The turn is flipped up to reveal the 7 and the river of A is a crushing blow to Dawn Wood, who hands over 230,000 to her namesake.

Two hands later a frustrated Dawn Wood announces all-in from the button and is quickly called by Lynne holding A K . Dawn has two live cards in T 4 , but after the board runs out 5 K 9 J 6 Dawn must make her exit to be awarded an £825 payday.

As the remaining two ladies begin a heads-up battle, their chips are counted and it could not be closer! Lynne has a chip stack of 525,000 and Dawn has 475,000 in front of her.

A champion is crowned…

After a period of raising, re-raising and a handful of flops, we have our first all-in moment. On a flop of 2 4 2 Dawn pushes her chips in and Lynne calls immediately. Dawn needs a miracle as she reveals Q 9 against Lynne’s K 2 . The turn of 9 completes one half of Dawn’s miracle, but the 4 on the river gives Lynne a full house, and the title of Betfred Women’s Poker Tour Champion 2008!!

Lynne has remained cool, calm and collected throughout the tour events, and in this final, but her emotions are clear for all to see as she holds onto the winner’s cheque for the £20,000 2008 Sponsorship Package.

We look forward to following Lynne’s progress in her sponsored events, details of which will be made available to you through www.womenspokertour.co.uk and www.betfredpoker.com.
